Sir Alex Ferguson is selling the £3.5million home in Cheshire that he shared with his wife and is now planning on moving to a village to be closer to his son and grandchildren

How about this for a brilliant tactical move by football legend Sir Alex Ferguson – the former Manchester United manager has bought a £1.2million house in an idyllic village next door to son Darren so he can be near his grandchildren.

According to a Mirror Sport report, Sir Alex snapped up the detached five-bedroom property in Goostrey, Cheshire. England footballer Raheem Sterling previously lived in the village, which first appears in the Domesday Book of 1086.

The Mirror also revealed last week Sir Alex was selling the family home he had lived in for 20 years in nearby Wilmslow with his wife Cathy before she passed away last month aged 84. It was put on the market for £3.5million. It comes complete with a “Ferguson clan” tartan carpet in the games room.

Estate agents say of the five-bedroom home: “This impressive, deceptively spacious detached home is… positioned within a very private, gated and secure plot. It boasts approximately 7,000sq ft.”

Sir Alex, 81, who has been listed as a company director at the property, put a snooker table from the games room up for sale in July.

The former player met Cathy in 1964 when they worked together in a typewriter factory. They were married two years later and Sir Alex described her as a “bedrock” in his life. The couple had three sons, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Glasgow-born Sir Alex was manager of Manchester United from 1986 to 2013 after a spell managing teams in Scotland, including Aberdeen, St Mirren, as well as the national team. He won 38 trophies at Man Utd – 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League finals and five FA Cups.
