Following the death of the governor of Ondo State Rotimi Akeredolu at the age of 67 after a prolonged illness, his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Acting Governor will be sworn in as the substantive governor of Ondo.

According to Section 191(1) of the 1999 constitution, “The Deputy Governor of a State shall hold the office of Governor of the State if the office of Governor becomes vacant by reason of death, resignation, impeachment, permanent incapacity, or removal of the governor from office for any other reason in accordance with sections 188 or 189 of this constitution.”

Akeredolu’s health had been a public concern, having returned to Nigeria in September after a three-month medical leave in Germany.

The governor had handed over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on December 13, for him to travel to Germany for treatment after his health reportedly worsened.

According to reports, Akeredolu passed away on Wednesday at around 2 a.m. while undergoing treatment in a German hospital.

He passed away after battling prostate cancer and leukemia, two conditions that had kept him unable to move for several months.
