Former US president Bill Clinton is in a California hospital with an infection but is responding well to treatment, doctors say.

The 75-year-old was admitted to UCI Medical Center in Irvine on Tuesday evening with a “non-COVID infection”, according to his spokesperson Angel Urena.

“He is on the mend, in good spirits, and incredibly thankful to the doctors, nurses and staff providing him with excellent care,” a statement said.

Mr. Clinton had gone to hospital after feeling fatigued.

He was diagnosed with sepsis – an infection of the bloodstream – thought to have started as a urinary tract infection, according to a CNN report which cited his doctors.

“After two days of treatment, his white blood cell count is trending down and he is responding to antibiotics well.

“We hope to have him go home soon.”

Mr Clinton, a Democrat, was the 42nd US president, serving from 1993 until 2001.

He was often praised for his ability to connect with people and to understand sometimes complicated policy issues.

But he was impeached by the House of Representatives in 1998 over his sexual relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

He remained in office after the Senate acquitted him the following year.

The former Arkansas governor had a quadruple bypass in 2004 and a procedure to open a blocked artery in his heart in 2010.

His current hospital stay is not believed to be related to his previous heart problems, however.
