Reyes Daniel Ruiz, 34, of California pleaded guilty on Monday to hacking into the 6,000 women in search of nude photos and videos.
Ruiz was a software engineer for Yahoo and gained illegal access into the private accounts through his job
He targeted young women, including personal friends and colleagues
Prosecutors charged him with one count of Computer Intrusion and one count of Interception of a Wire Communication
Ruiz faces up to five years in prison, with a $250,000 fine plus restitution
Sentencing will happen February 3, 2020
Ruiz: ‘cracked user passwords and accessed internal Yahoo systems to compromise the Yahoo accounts.’
The suspect said he targeted younger women, including colleagues and friends.
After gaining access, Ruiz would then make copies of images and videos he found in the personal accounts without permission, and store the stolen data at his home.
When Ruiz gained access to the victim’s Yahoo accounts, he would then compromise their iCloud, Facebook, Gmail, Dropbox and other online accounts in hopes of finding more private images.
When his employer became suspicious of his activity, Ruiz said he destroyed his computer and hard drive where he kept the illicit photos and videos.
On April 4, Ruiz was indicted by a federal grand jury after and the resulting prosecution was the result of a FBI investigation.
