The 10-term member of Congress merely told his constituents on Monday he was taking up a ‘new opportunity to fight for the most important issues I believe in.’
It was the Trump media group that announced his new CEO role, where Nunes will sit at the head of Trump’s yet-to-released social media platform, TRUTH Social.
Trump praised Nunes in the media group’s statement, calling him ‘a fighter and a leader.’
‘He will make an excellent CEO of TMTG,’ Trump said.

Nunes, in the TMTG statement, said it was time to ‘reopen the Internet.’
‘The time has come to reopen the Internet and allow for the free flow of ideas and expression without censorship. The United States of America made the dream of the Internet a reality and it will be an American company that restores the dream. I’m humbled and honored President Trump has asked me to lead the mission and the world class team that will deliver on this promise,’ he said.
Nunes would be next in line to chair the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which writes the nation’s tax law, if Republicans win control of the House in next year’s midterm election.
Instead he’s calling quits – not even staying to finish out his 10th term.
House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy praised Nunes tenure in Congress and his new job.
‘There is no better person prepared to compete head-to-head and lead an alternative to the big tech and big media cartel that has carried water for the Democrat Party for years than Devin,’ he said in a statement.
The California congressman was a staunch ally of Donald Trump’s during the former president’s two impeachments on Capitol Hill. And he was a vocal critic of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian efforts to influence in the 2016 presidential election.
Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom just two weeks before the inauguration of President Joe Biden.
Trump announced the launch of his new social media platform in October, which is slated for full release in 2022.
Nunes’ resignation will give Democrats some breathing room when it comes to votes. Speaker Nancy Pelosi holds a scant four-seat majority. Nunes departure gives her an extra vote edge.

By leaving Congress this year, Nunes will set up an early 2022 race for his seat.
According to state election law, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom of California must call a special election within 14 days of Nunes leaving office, and a primary must be held 18 to 20 weeks later.
The top two vote-getters in the primary would head to a general election, meaning that the Nunes seat could be vacant until midsummer.
Nunes also is avoiding a potentially tough re-election campaign in 2022 midterm election.
The independent commission that is redrawing California’s congressional district hasn’t completed its work but an early draft of the new map tilted Nunes’ district toward Democrats, potentially complicating his path to reelection.
Nunes could simply run a friendlier district. California does not require members of the House to live in the district they represent.
‘Recently, I was presented with a new opportunity to fight for the most important issues I believe in,’ Nunes said in the email to constituents on Monday. ‘I’m writing to let you know I’ve decided to pursue this opportunity, and therefore I will be leaving the House of Representatives at the end of 2021.’
Nunes became a target on social media with the parody accounts Devin Nunes’ Mom and Devin Nunes’ Cow.
He launched a $250 million lawsuit against Twitter and some of its users for allowing the ‘insulting’ tweets that he called ‘abusive, hateful and defamatory’.
A judge later ruled he could not sue Twitter over the cow’s tweets.
Nunes also failed in an effort to have a federal judge force Twitter to shut down the cow account.
The cow account identifies itself as: ‘Hanging out on the dairy in Iowa looking for the lil’ treasonous cowpoke.’
He took the unusual decision to take the courts to try to take down the account, which had become an irritant and, according to Nunes, a political liability.
Judge John Marshall ruled the site was ‘immune from the defamation claims.’
Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act has been used to protect platforms from content published by others on their sites.
