One in Five Women Will Never Have Children – Study

Spread the love

The proportion of women who never have children has doubled in a generation, figures show.

Almost one in five are childless by the age of 45, the age the Office for National Statistics defines as the end of their childbearing years.

This compares to nine per cent of women — about one in ten — from the previous generation.

The ONS said people were increasingly likely to put off decisions about kids until it may be biologically too late.

Women who turned 45 in 2016 had an average of 1.9 children, down from 2.21 for their mothers’ generation.

Teenage mums are also reducing, with just six per cent having had at least one child before their 20th birthday.

The ONS’s Richard Miles said there were many reasons why women appeared to be having fewer children.

He said: “Education is a good example, and also continuing to work.”

In total, 18 per cent of women born in 1971 had no kids, compared with 11 per cent of their mum’s generation.
