A husband and wife team from Ecuador have made it into the record books after they were officially recognised as the world’s oldest married couple.  Julio Mora, 110, and Waldramina Quinteros, 104, have a combined age of just under 215 years and have been married since 1941.

They wed in secret because their families disapproved and nearly eight decades later are still together and are both in good health.  Guinness World Records recognised the feat in mid-August.

Their marriage is not the longest ever recorded – that milestone belongs to Herbert Fisher and his wife Zelmyra who were married for 86 years and 290 days until Herbert’s death in 2011.

Julio and Waldramina are both retired teachers and live in Ecuador’s capital of Quito. They have four surviving children, 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Relatives say the pair are currently ‘a little depressed’ because they have missed big family get-togethers due to the pandemic. ‘Since March, we have not had any of that,’ daughter Cecilia said. ‘My parents need family contact.’

Julio was born before the First World War on March 10 1910 and Waldramina on October 16 1915.

They wed on February 7 1941, in the first church built by the Spanish in Quito: La Iglesia de El Belen.

Cecilia said her father enjoys watching television and drinking milk and her mother, who is a big fan of desserts, likes to read the newspaper every morning.

They credit their long-lasting relationship to the love and respect that they have held towards each other since their very first meeting.

Asked what makes a long-lasting union, the couple said: ‘Family unity under the rules of love, mutual respect, honest work, and proper education based on family values are the keys to healthy coexistence.’

The couple were introduced in 1934 by Julio’s cousin, who was married to Waldramina’s sister.

Their families did not attend the wedding because they were vehemently opposed the union and ‘did not have a good relationship.’

But luckily the animosity didn’t last, and the couple said: ‘With time and patience we were able to unite them and we became an example and the best reference for the younger generations.’

Previously listed as the oldest married couple were Texas couple Charlotte and John Henderson, who have a combined age of 212 years and 52 days.
