Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof had a contrasting week to his centre back partner Harry Maguire as he reportedly carried out a heroic deed in his native Sweden by coming to the aid of an elderly woman.
Lindelof has therefore been thanked by Swedish police for catching the thief that robbed elderly woman.
Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported the incident on Monday, after the crime took place in Lindelof’s home city of Vasteras, which is west of Stockholm.
While Maguire was arrested and charged following allegations of involvement in a fight while holidaying on the Greek island of Mykonos, Lindelof turned the hero in a different altercation back at home.
Asked for comment, United confirmed the story. A police statement said a man in his thirties riding a bicycle snatched a bag belonging to a woman in her nineties on Monday morning.
Lindelof recently showed his fiery side in the Europa League by arguing with Bruno Fernandes
“A man who was in the vicinity is said to have run after the suspected perpetrator, caught up with him and held him until the police arrived at the scene,” police said, without naming Lindelof.
“The police want to take the opportunity and thank the witness for a quick and wise intervention.”
The woman who was robbed told Aftonbladet that she’d like to thank Lindelof by buying him lunch. The arrested man faces charges of aggravated theft and minor drug offences.
It marks quite different publicity to that generated by centre back partner Maguire following his end-of-season holiday in Greece.
Maguire is accused of assaulting local police officers after his 20-year-old sister, Daisy, was assaulted and injured with a sharp object according to Greek media. It is understood that the police attending the scene were dressed in plain clothes and not easily identifiable as officers.
Centre back partner Harry Maguire had a much more difficult week while out in Mykonos
One source has said that initial accusation of bribery has now been dropped and that Maguire was simply attempting to pay an on the spot fine to deal with the situation.
Maguire denied all allegations though he made a statement of apology to the court on Saturday. Maguire had been staying on Mykonos with his fiancee Fern Hawkins and their children as well as other family members.
Lindelof is reported to have been out with his wife Maja, who is said to have witnessed the incident unfold.
