Airports in Damascus and Aleppo are out of service after attacks by Israel, Syrian state media has said. It comes as the Israelis said Gaza will not be supplied with any electricity, water or fuel until hostages are freed.
“Bursts of missiles” hit airports in Damascus and Aleppo at the same time, state news agency SANA has reported, citing a Syrian military source.
The source said the strikes were a bid to distract the world’s attention from Israel’s war with Hamas militants in Gaza.
But Reuters reports sources as saying the strikes were intended to disrupt Iranian supply lines to Syria, where Tehran’s influence has grown since 2011.
The attacks come a day before Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, is due to visit Syria.
447 children killed in Gaza
Officials in Gaza have provided a breakdown on those people killed by Israeli airstrikes.
Among the 1,417 dead are 447 children and 248 women, the local health ministry said.
A further 6,268 people have been wounded since Saturday.
“The health system has begun to collapse,” the ministry said in a statement today.
“The number of injured people is greater than the hospitals’ clinical capabilities, even after they were expanded and the injured were placed in the corridors,” the ministry said.
More than 1,300 Israelis have been confirmed dead since Hamas’s attacks.
Number of Palestinians killed rises
The number of Palestinians killed in Israeli retaliatory strikes since Hamas launched its attack has risen again.
At least 1,417 Palestinians are now confirmed to have died, according to the Gaza health ministry.
A further 6,268 people have been wounded.
The number of dead has climbed today as Israel bombards the Gaza Strip.
Israel has also reported more deaths today, with the total standing at 1,300.
