Gonzalo Aguirre plays for third tier side Defensores de Belgrano and was arrested on Thursday. Initially, it appeared as though child had tragically died of natural causes, but autopsy revealed signs of sexual abuse
Local press report that, initially, Aguirre had claimed the boy had died in a tragic accident after falling and hitting his head while taking a bath.
However, the autopsy showed he had been badly beaten and was the victim of sexual abuse. It is reported the footballer then admitted his guilt to the police.
His club’s president Marcelo Achile told local news agency Telam: “We thought of Gonzalo as a young and introverted guy and, as a player, he was a very good player, who even played some top flight matches.
“But nothing indicated anything of this magnitude. We knew he had some problems with strange episodes, but we never thought anything like this.”
Meanwhile, the club made an official statement, which read: “The board of directors and the sporting community of Club Atletico Defensores de Belgrano express their profound pain and dismay at the cowardly killing.
“We stand in solidarity with the grieving family, wholly repudiating what happened and hoping that justice will resolve this terrible situation.
“Likewise, and in reference to the player Gonzalo Aguirre, it is reported that he had a contract with us.
“We sent him a document-letter, which was not answered and he no longer belongs to us due to a breach of contract, as he has not presented himself to training in six months.”
