Court Jails Man For Stealing Tomatoes

An Oreda Magistrate Court has sentenced a 32-year old man, Austine Ibe to two-year imprisonment for stealing 75 cartons of tin tomatoes.

The tomatoes, valued at N315, 600, was said to be owned by one Paul Okafor.

The convict reportedly burgled the warehouse, where the goods were stored at Butcher Street, off Forestry Road, Benin City, Edo State.

Prosecuting counsel, Patrick Agbonifo, told the court that the offence was punishable under sections 414(1) and 390(9) of the Criminal Code 48 Vol II Laws of the defunct Bendel state of Nigeria, 1976 now applicable in Edo State.

Ibe was found guilty of the two-count charge of theft preferred against him.

Presiding Magistrate, F.E Akhere sentenced the accused to two years imprisonment without an option of fine.
