A businessman, Kennedy Iyere, has been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court for allegedly issuing a dud cheque of N2 million in Lagos.
Iyere was arrested by the police in Ilasan, Lekki, following a complaint by the management of Oakwood Park Hotel Ltd that he used their event centre for a party and paid with N2m dud cheque.
The accused from Esan, Edo State was charged on one count charge of felony, to wit, issuance of dud cheque.
Police Counsel, Friday Mameh told the court in charge No B/26/2018 that the accused committed the offence on 6 October, 2017 at Oakwood Park Hotel Ltd, Lekki, Lagos.
Mameh told the court further that the Management of Oakwood Park Hotel reported to the police that the accused used their event centre to host an NGO party and issued a N2m First Bank cheque for payment.
When presented for payment, the cheque was dishonored by the bank due to insufficient money in the said account.
Mameh said that DPO Onwuemegbu directed Inspector Orukotan Lonikola and his team to go after the accused and arrest him.
He said the police team arrested the accused in a hotel in Abuja and brought him back to Lagos.
Mameh added that the offence committed is punishable under section 315(a) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and Magistrate Folashade Botoku granted him bail in the sum of N250,000 with two surties in like sum.
Botoku adjourned the case till 15 May, 2018 for mention and ordered that the accused be kept at the Ikoyi prison Lagos till he fulfilled the bail conditions.
