Aaron Wan-Bissaka ‘offered Man Utd exit route’ as five players put up for sale

Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in re-signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka amid rumours he’s not part of Erik ten Hag’s plans at Manchester United.

The £50million signing, 24, has failed to flourish since leaving Selhurst Park for Old Trafford in June 2019. Wan-Bissaka has made 126 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, yet Diogo Dalot has often been preferred at right-back this season.

Ten Hag was recently confirmed as United’s new manager and has reportedly put five players up for sale. As well as Wan-Bissaka, the list includes Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Alex Telles and Anthony Martial. The latter is currently on loan at Sevilla.

Much was expected of Wan-Bissaka after a breakthrough 2018-19 campaign at Palace. He was named the club’s Player of the Year and was called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad in August 2019, although a back injury forced him to withdraw.

According to The Athletic, Palace are keen on completing a deal but it’s still early days. It’s believed manager Patrick Vieira wants to improve the right-back department, with Nathan Ferguson playing just eight minutes of senior football this term due to injury.

Vieira has been forced to rely on veterans Nathaniel Clyne and Joel Ward for most of the season. It’s a different story at left-back, where Tyrick Mitchell – a 22-year-old academy graduate – has excelled to earn his first two senior England caps.

Palace will not be willing to return the £50m United paid for Wan-Bissaka three years ago and a loan deal could be likely. He’s valued at £27m by Transfermarkt and has two years left on his existing deal, with the option of a further year.

Wan-Bissaka, signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has been criticised for not producing enough quality going forward. He’s provided just 11 assists in 131 Premier League games. In comparison, Trent Alexander-Arnold has produced 12 assists this season alone.

“Now Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a very good defender, but he will not get you seven or eight assists a season,” said former Arsenal playmaker Paul Merson in September. Wan-Bissaka hasn’t provided a single assist in the Premier League this term.

Paul Scholes has described Wan-Bissaka as a “brilliant defender” but “useless on the ball”, while Roy Keane said in October: “Wan-Bissaka, I don’t even think Palace would take him back! He’s not good enough for Man Utd. No feel for the ball, decision making.”

On signing Wan-Bissaka in June 2019, then manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “Aaron is one of the best upcoming defenders in the Premier League. He has the right work ethic, talent and mentality to play for Manchester United and he fits exactly the type of player that we are looking to bring into the squad to help us improve and push on further.

“Aaron is a young, hungry player and eager to learn and that’s important at his age. I am delighted he has signed with us and we look forward to continuing his tremendous development so far.”
